FEATS - Facilitating Elementary Achievement through Science
This two day event in mid-June was held at the Summit Conference
Center in Aurora. In attendance were representatives
from 22 elementary schools across 8 Colorado school districts.
Approximately 150 teachers enjoyed
presentations by Dr. Michael Klentschy, who is the former Superintendent
of El Centro Public Schools in California and a current faculty member
at San Diego State University. He is a nationally recognized
consultant in science education for his work in increasing achievement
scores in schools where students are highly impacted by poverty and
learning English as a second language. Dr. Klentschy was accompanied by
Laurie Thompson, the former Director of CalTech CAPSI PreCollege
Curriculum Initiative and Ron De Fronzo, the Science Director for East
Bay Collaborative in Rhode Island. The three distinguished educators led
informative presentations and smaller breakout sessions, which explained
to the teachers how to support their students in writing about their
science inquiry. The sessions had a profound impact, as several inspired
groups of teachers discussed strategies for the coming school year long
after the speakers concluded. A big thanks to all those who attended!
