FEATS Summer 2010
| Facilitating Elementary
Achievement Through Science is an institutional model for
elementary school teams. The model supports students in writing
about their inquiry and learning from standards-based hands-on
science experiments. Dr. Michael Klentschy, in collaboration
with San Diego State University, has documented increasing
achievement scores in schools where students are highly impacted
by poverty and learning English as a second language. Students
made significant gains in writing, mathematical graphing
and science |
FEATS participants will:
- Understand the key program elements that lead to increasing
student learning and assessment results in writing, science, and
mathematics.
- Understand how to provide a foundation for student engagement
through the use of instructional strategies with "hands-on" science
materials that promote inquiry.
- Develop integrated literacy/science lessons that are consistent
with current research and best practices in standards-based
elementary science instructional planning.

Enhancing Communication Skills for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Many individuals with autism do not develop effective spoken language; these individuals require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to meet their communication needs. The first part of this workshop will focus on embedding communication opportunities into classroom routines and provide examples of communication temptations to elicit communication from students who are pre verbal. Strategies for staying on topic, conversation strategies and the pragmatic use of language will also be discussed.
The second portion of this workshop will discuss effective AAC systems and strategies to ensure individuals with autism can effectively communicate their wants and needs and make choices. Strategies to utilize AAC to address challenging behavior will be incorporated. User-stories via video and photographs will demonstrate the use of empirically validated strategies. Hands-on learning opportunities with low and high tech communication systems will be incorporated for attendees.

Positive Behavior Supports for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
In the absence of a reliable and functional means of getting their wants and needs met, people with ASD may use problem behavior as a default means to make their needs known. This session will focus on teaching participants to functionally assess problem behavior and identify the “why” or purpose of problem behavior.
Based on the identification of the function of problem behavior, participants will develop a Positive Behavior Support plan that includes proactive strategies to prevent the problem behavior from occurring in the first place, and short term intervention strategies to put in place while the student is learning the replacement behaviors.
Participants will be taught new ways of responding when the problem behavior does occur and will develop a reinforcement plan to reward the desirable replacement behavior. The end of the session will focus on the development of a Crisis intervention plan to implement in the event of plan failure

Enhancing Social Skills for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Children with ASD may have a marked lack of interest in social interactions and need direct social skill instruction and numerous opportunities to practice. Children with ASD require meaningful experiences to generalize the direct instruction. Too often in inclusive settings there is an expectation set for children to use “their level of social development, and the resulting social goals may be unrealistic.
This session was created to help teachers and therapists plan for and identify meaningful social opportunities in an inclusive classroom. Teachers will learn ways of embedding social skills into naturally existing routines in their classroom. In addition to walking away with practical strategies we will pair data collection strategies for planning with
individualization of the social skill techniques.
Each participant will have the opportunity to utilize planning forms, data collection forms, and social skill work plans.
